General tree description

Populus lasiocarpa is a medium sized tree, up to around 25 metres tall, with grey, shaggy bark. It has very large, heart-shaped leaves, up to 35cm long and 23cm wide. They are bright green with conspicuous red veins, woolly underneath and slightly leathery. Male and female flowers (catkins) exist on the same tree. The male catkins are yellow, 20 to 25cm long and often extending from a female section. The fruits consist of strings of green bead-like capsules which open in mid-summer to release white fluff and seeds.
