General tree description
Populus nigra 'Italica' is a cultivar of the black poplar, Populus nigra. It is a large (up to 38 metres tall), narrow columnar tree, with close vertical branches and grey-brown, moderately craggy bark that becomes burred with age. The leaves are small (5 to 9cm long), triangular to diamond-shaped, and pointed at the tip. This is a male tree, bearing red catkins in mid spring.
