General tree description

Liquidambar styraciflua can grow to around 30 metres tall. It has grey-brown bark with scaly ridges, and the twigs may have corky wing-like projections. The leaves are maple-like, five-lobed and glossy green, turning spectacular shades of red, yellow and purple in autumn. The fruits are spherical (around 3cm diameter) and spiky, hanging on the branches through the winter.
