General tree description
Acer rubrum is a large, dense tree, growing to 26 metres or more. It has dark grey, closely cracked bark. The leaves are palmate or tri-lobed, 6 to 10 cm across, with variable teeth and margins. They are a dark matt green above, grey-green to almost white underneath, and they turn a rich scarlet in autumn. The red colouring is present almost throughout the seasons, with red twigs in winter and crimson spring flowers that appear before the leaves.
