General tree description
Acer palmatum is a small tree typically 6 to 10 metres tall, exceptionally up to 15 metres. It has a rounded shape on a short bole and may have multiple trunks joining near ground level. Its bark is smooth, brown with faint pale stripes, becoming grey on old trees. The leaves are bright green, 4 to 7cm long and broad, palmate with five or seven deep, finely serrated lobes. The flowers are dark purple-pink and small (6 to 8mm across), appearing in spring, in spreading panicles of up to fifteen flowers. The fruit is a pair of pale red, winged samaras, each samara 2–3 cm long.
