General tree description
Ulmus 'Lobel' is a hybrid elm cultivar, bred for resistance to Dutch elm disease. It was cloned in 1962 from Ulmus glabra 'Exoniensis' x wallichiana (Wych elm) and Ulmus x hollandica 'Bea Schwarz'. It is a medium sized tree, typically 15 to 18 metres tall, and has a narrow upright shape. Its bark is smooth silver-grey, developing blackish-grey grooves in maturity. The leaves are obovate, dark green, 6 to 9 cm and are notably late to flush in spring. Light green flowers appear in bunches in March/April. The fruits are brown, flat winged nutlets.
