General tree description
Sorbus torminalis is a large tree, up to 28 metres tall. It has grey bark that becomes black-brown with age and develops scaly plates. The leaves are maple-like, sharply lobed, glossy dark green, turning golden brown or red in autumn. There are clusters of creamy flowers in late spring or early summer, followed by brown berry-like 1cm diameter fruits.
