General tree description

Populus yunnanensis is one of the balsam poplars (a group of poplar species notable for the balsam scent of their buds). It is a fast growing medium sized tree (usually up to 20 to 25 metres tall) with a conical shape and grey-brown fissured bark. The leaves are ovate or triangular, up to 15cm long, deep green with red stalks and veins. The flowers are catkins up to 15 cm long, and the fruits are green capsules containing small seeds covered in fine hairs.
