General tree description
Davidia involucrata var. vilmoriniana is a variant of Davidia involucrata, the Pocket-handkerchief tree. Its only significant difference from the species is that its leaves have smooth undersides, while the species has dense, short hairs on the underside of its leaves. It is a medium sized tree, up to around 20 metres tall, with orange-brown bark, heart-shaped leaves and spectacular white bracts surrounding the flowers in May. The fruits are hard, dark-green nuts, which turn purple when ripe.
