General tree description
Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' is a cultivar of the Smooth Japanese maple, Acer palmatum. It is a small tree with an upright, compact shape and broad crown, typically growing to around 5 metres tall. The leaves are small and dark green with five deeply cut lobes. They turn gold in autumn. In spring there are small, reddish-purple flowers followed by samaras (winged seeds) that ripen from late summer to autumn.
