There appears to have been a kiosk supplying refreshments in the general area of the boatstage and promenade from at least the late 1960s. By this time the historic refreshment house had been demolished and a new cafe was still in the planning stages. In January 1970 the Parks Committee approved in principle the development of a new cafe on the existing kiosk site, by the existing tenant [1].By 1973 the new cafe was nearing completion and it was officially named Terra Nova in March 1975.[2]
By the early 1980s both cafe and kiosk were operated by the same caterer (Adeva).[3] The location of the kiosk was not recorded but it was probably beside the west entrance gates to the promenade, as shown in 1991 photographs below. This is also indicated by aerial photographs from 1979, which appear to show a building beside the west gate.[4]
In November 1993 the Leisure and Amenities Committee agreed in principle to accept an offer from the private sector to provide a permanent refreshment/ice cream kiosk, similar in design and in keeping with the new boathouse and associated buildings.[5] The following year in January it was reported that a planning application had been submitted for the kiosk and that the full cost of the project was to be met by the caterer.[6]
